Vocabulary Tips Is Data Singular or Plural
Vocabulary Tips Is Data Singular or Plural Vocabulary Tips: Is Data Singular or Plural? In the grammarian community, there are some who will tip over a table and storm out of the room if anyone dares to combine the word ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠with a singular verb in their presence: e.g., ââ¬Å"The data is conclusive: Many pedants have severe anger issues.â⬠Theyââ¬â¢d probably also object to the singular ââ¬Å"their.â⬠(Image: CURavensLog/YouTube) Are these people overreacting? Yes, of course they are. But do they have a point regardless? Should we be using ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠as a plural noun? And, if so, what is the singular version? Datum and Data Traditionally, ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠was a plural. The singular form (i.e., the word for a single fact or piece of information) was ââ¬Å"datum.â⬠As such, we might say something like the following: This datum is not significant in itself, but the combined data are hard to deny. In this sentence, ââ¬Å"datumâ⬠clearly refers to a single piece of information, with ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠reserved for a collection of facts. This is important when it comes to subject-verb agreement, so the singular ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠is paired with the singular verb ââ¬Å"is,â⬠while ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠is followed by the plural verb ââ¬Å"are.â⬠Data as a Mass Noun Over time, however, usage of ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠has changed. Thus, it is now commonly used as a mass noun (otherwise known as an uncountable or non-count noun). This means that although ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠still refers to a collection of facts, it is treated as singular for grammatical purposes: Information was collected from hundreds of respondents, so the data is very persuasive. Consequently, ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠is now essentially a synonym for ââ¬Å"information,â⬠another mass noun that refers to a collection of facts or a large amount of evidence. ââ¬Å"Data isâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Data areâ⬠? Most of the time, even in academic writing, ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠is now used as a mass noun, so it should be combined with singular verbs. This would mean that ââ¬Å"data isâ⬠is usually correct. However, in some fields ââ¬Å"data areâ⬠is still considered technically correct unless youââ¬â¢re referring to a single fact, in which case ââ¬Å"datumâ⬠should be used instead. As such, itââ¬â¢s a good idea to check your schoolââ¬â¢s style guide on this issue. If it doesnââ¬â¢t provide specific instructions, the singular ââ¬Å"dataâ⬠is probably fine. But you could always check with your professor to see if he or she has a preference if you want to be absolutely sure!

Health insurance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Health insurance - Essay Example Therefore, this paper will look into a health advertisement and discuss it in its fullness. Health and health insurance as a topic is important in most peopleââ¬â¢s lives. Decisions on what the best medical policies are suitable for an individual and their families as well as what medical services are best suited for them often take center stage in planning. Therefore, companies and medical providers have the obligation to research and find out what consumers need and how effectively they can provide these needs. They have to take into consideration; the pricing, the treatment, cause of the drug as compared to its complements, then advertise it in a manner that will captivate the consumers and make them want to try it. Advertisements assure the target market of how effective the product is and how well- tested it is should be included to erase any fear of bad and severe side effects or otherwise. There is an advertisement of the Swiss drug maker, Novartis, on multiple sclerosis disease that says ââ¬Å"Hey MS, Take This!â⬠(Olson). The advert is about people who refuse to let the disease control their lives. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the brain and the spinal cord. These parts of the body are the central and core parts that control most, if not all the other body parts. Multiple Sclerosis can affect the body hindering an individualââ¬â¢s perfomance as well as personal independence; thus, making them rely on assistance for the rest of their lives. The advert shows people with the Gilenya drug on their tongues that are stuck out (Olson). This shows that they are willing to fight against any disease that may want to affect their bodies neurologically or otherwise. The text ââ¬Å"Hey MS, Take This!â⬠(Olson). The graphics of extremely good-looking and healthy persons brings out the defiance nature that we should adopt against any condition. It is encouraging and shows a positive fighting spirit and the strength that

Discuss with examples and detail, the responsibilities of the First Term Paper
Discuss with examples and detail, the responsibilities of the First Officer on the scene of a reported crime - Term Paper Example Introduction The primary call to a police officer regarding a crime scene usually comes in different forms: a crime that has already taken place and has just been discovered, a crime in progress, or a crime that just occurred. The way in which the officer responds depends on how he/she receives the call. For instance, he/she can proceed quickly and directly to the scene. When a law-enforcing officer receives a call to respond to a scene of crime, he/she must always follow a logical series of events in order to ascertain everyoneââ¬â¢s safety as well as appropriate investigation of the incident. He or she must treat all responses to crime scenes the same way, with expectations that the case under investigation will proceed to trial and be subjected to the criminal justice systemââ¬â¢s procedures and policies (Buckles, 2007 and Dale & Becker, 2007). Since a first responder acts in response to all sorts of crimes as well as possible crime scenes, he or she should always act under the assumption that the suspects are still in the crime scene or in its surroundings. Is it therefore critical for him/her to make keen observations on the way to the scene of crime ââ¬â should be very alert and should constantly make mental notes. With the assumption that suspects may be fleeing from the crime scene, he/she should take note of suspicious vehicles details such as color, make, model and license plates, as well as pedestriansââ¬â¢ descriptions. Better still, he/she can record all these information on a tape, which can be transcribed later to act as leads for law officers as they follow up on a crime after the initial response (Dale & Becker, 2007). Upon arrival, the officer will make use of tactical measures of safely approaching the scene and looking for suspects, victims, and witnesses. Again, depending on the type of crime, the presupposition is that there is a suspect at the crime scene and that there may be victims requiring emergency care. It is therefore worthy emphasizing that the focus of the first officer on the scene of a reported crime is on his own safety as well as that of other individuals at the crime scene, including the victims, other officers taking care of the victims, and those pursuing/ looking for the suspect. It is also worth noting and emphasizing that how to approach a crime scene and what to do are vital as the first responding officer enters and examines the crime scene. What to examine and note include whether or not there is a suspect at the scene, whether or not there is a victim who is being held hostage or who needs emergency care and what safety issues or environmental conditions need to be dealt with (Buckles, 2007). The initial response to a crime is supposed to be expeditious and systematic. On arriving at a crime scene, the first responding officer/the first officer to arrive on the scene of a crime should perform his first responsibility of assessing the scene. It is important for him/her to approach and enter crime scenes as soon as possible, yet carefully, while at the same time exploring any potential events, evidence, vehicles, individuals as well as any environmental conditions that may be linked to the crime. He should keep a record of information such as the location /address of the crime, the exact date and time, the type of call that he/she received, and anything else that might have a bearing on the crime/the scene of crime. He or

Deriving Awe :: Philosophy Philosophical Papers
Deriving Awe Having become deeply compelled by the ability of evolutionary theory to tell a story that consumes or subsumes all others, I have followed the story of change back beyond the origin of life, beyond the formation of the solar system, back to a point where the first something came into existence. Though it may not do so for everyone, the story even allows me one more step along this rewinding trajectory, a step toward rejecting the need for any intention or plan by upholding the power of random change to produce order. I have found it very useful to tell a story in which the absolute truth is randomness. This is not to ignore the phenomenally intricate, ordered and interdependent systems that organize matter in our universe, but rather to understand creation in terms of an infinite dimension of possibility through which navigation occurs fueled by random change. My story, then, becomes one in which the Beginning is really just the beginning of one path through the infinite dimensions o f possibility, or what Daniel Dennett calls design space (Dennett 1995). Order or design does not rely on the Word or intention but is produced as changes accumulate and become directed by one another, restricting and refining a particular branching journey among the possibilities. Thus, reaching backwards along the story of evolution I grasp randomness and a Wordless beginning. Reaching forward into new designs and increasing complexity I suddenly encounter human agency and imagination and I am catapulted into the possibility of transcending design space. "If a brain were truly capable of non-algorithmic activity, and if we have such brains, and if our brains are themselves the products of an algorithmic process...an algorithmic process (natural selection in its various levels and incarnations) creates a non-algorithmic subprocess of subroutine, turning the whole process (evolution up to and including...brains) into a non-algorithmic process after all. This would be a cascade of cranes creating, eventually, a real skyhook" (Dennett 1995)! This argument suggests that natural selection of random change (AKA cranes) has created a skyhook- something that exists independently of and has the power to manipulate evolutionary processes. It defends the refusal to believe that human agency, free will, meaning, responsibility, etc. are all reducible and ultimately adaptive illusions. Yet, however desirous we are of such a defense, the very ability to know and interpret that we seek to uphold as a human transcendence of evolution must also cause us to recognize the flaws in this attempt to secure a degree of evolutionary removal.

Blood Supply to the Muscles
The Physiology of Fitness Assignment 1 Helpsheet Step 1 You need to introduce your assignment, here I would define two key terms for the entire of this assignment these are chronic and acute. Example Answer There are many changes to the body during exercise; these can be classified as acute and chronic. Acute meaning they are short term and happen almost instantly with the onset of exercise. The other chronic is long term and allows the body to adapt its capabilities so therefore it can meet new demands in the future.Examples of these will be discussed in time through each one of these bodily systems: musculoskeletal, energy, respiratory and cardiovascular system. Step 2 At this stage of the assignment you need to look at the first body system of musculoskeletal. Here you need to identify all of the acute changes that take place within this system and then relate this to a sporting example. Some of the changes you need to discuss are: Increased blood supply, increase in muscle pliabi lity, increased range of movement and muscle fibre micro tears.Example Answer Increases the range of movement ââ¬â when we start to exercise the movements of our joints means that synovial fluid starts to secrete within the joints. The fluid becomes less viscous and therefore the range of movement within the joint increases. An example of this in sport is the need for a warm up for a butterfly swimmer. So they can get the full range of movement at the shoulder joint that area has to be warmed up prior to the race. Step 3Keeping the musculoskeletal changes in mind you now need to discuss the chronic responses, these are: hypertrophy, increase in tendon strength, increase in myoglobin stores, increase in muscle strength, increase in tolerance to lactic acid, increase in bone calcium stores, increased stretch of ligaments, increased thickness of hyaline cartilage and increased production of synovial fluid. Example Answer Increased production of synovial fluid ââ¬â as mentioned previously the movements stimulate the secretion of synovial fluid. With regular exercise this fluid on initial release is less viscous and the range of movement at the joint increases as connective tissue improves its flexibility. An example in sport is a high jumper. Over a prolonged period of training their knee joint in particular will take a lot of strain, this repetitive strain will allow for the knee joint to increase synovial fluid production as the jump can not e performed without the knee joint. Step 4 You now need a new side heading of energy systems and at this stage we will talk about the acute responses of the energy system. You need to discuss each of the three energy systems and how they initially respond to exercise. Example Answer Creatine Phosphate System ââ¬â When exercise intensity is high, or energy needs are immediate, Creatine phosphate stored in the muscle is broken down to provide energy to make ATP. When the high energy bond in Phosphocreatine is broken, the energy it releases is used to resynthesise ATP. Explosive work can be achieved but for only short periods at maximum intensity. An example of this would be triple jump, if the athlete needs immediate energy this system is used, as the sport will last up to 10 seconds on completion of each jump it can not wait for energy from the Lactic Acid system. Step 5 In this section you need to discuss the chronic changes which apply to the energy system, you need to discuss in particular the aerobic system but also make specific reference to an increase in aerobic and anaerobic enzymes and increased use of fats as an energy source. Example AnswerIncreased use of fats as an energy source ââ¬â Fat oxidation increases if exercise extends to long periods, as glycogen levels deplete. This is particularly prevalent to marathon runners. These athletes will burn of the glycogen in the carbohydrates digested and will need another source of energy to refer to this is where fats are then used. St ep 6 Under the side heading of respiratory you need to discuss the acute changes in this system. You will need to mention the following changes: increased breathing rate and increased tidal volume as well as many others.Example Answer Increased breathing rate ââ¬â due to the fact the working muscles require energy during exercise the brain sends signals to increase the breathing rate. This increase in breathing rate allows for more oxygen to be taken in and then delivered to the working muscles. It also allows for the waste products to be exhaled much quicker. An example of this is a footballer will gradually increase their breathing rate the longer the game lasts and the more that the muscles demand oxygen to fulfil physical movements. Step 7You now need to discuss the chronic changes to the respiratory system again relating them to sport to show understanding; you need to include the following: increased vital capacity, increase in minute ventilation, increased strength of res piratory muscles and increase in oxygen diffusion rate. Example Answer Increased strength of respiratory muscles ââ¬â like any muscle the more that it is worked the greater itââ¬â¢s strength, therefore the same can be said of the intercostals muscles of the chest cavity, due to the increased work load in breathing they become more efficient allow for greater expansion of the chest. An example of this would be a tour de France cyclist. Due to the intense nature of the event there chest capacity will have to increase to meet the constant demands. Step 8 Under the side heading of cardiovascular system you will now need to discuss the acute changes to this system giving sporting examples. The following changes will need to be discussed: Heart rate anticipatory response, activity response, increased blood pressure, vasodilation and vasoconstriction. Example AnswerVasoconstriction ââ¬â this is where the blood vessels decrease in diameter to restrict the flow of blood to an area of the body which does not need the blood supplies as much as another area. An example of this is a boxer, here due to the repetitive punching from the fighter the arms and upper body needs the blood to allow for regular movement, the legs receive less. This is why when a fighter is knocked down commentators sometimes say ââ¬Å"his legs have goneâ⬠this is because of a lack of oxygen as it has all gone to the upper body and brain. Step 9 Finally you need to talk about the chronic change to the cardiovascular system. This area is vast and needs a lot of detail. The changes you will need to discuss include: cardiac hypertrophy, increase in stroke volume, cardiac output, resting heart rate, capillarisation, blood volume, blood pressure, recovery time and aerobic fitness. Example Answer Decreased resting heart rate ââ¬â this is a chronic change because the heart adapts and learns how to cope with the demands of extreme and intense workouts the more you exercise, this therefore means the normal everyday task do not apply as much strain to the body therefore not requiring the heart to increase blood supply to the areas of the body that are working.

Why I Should Become A Nurse - 1214 Words
Every person has their dream of how their life will play out. For years I have wondered where life will take me in the future. Abraham Lincoln once said, The best way to predict your future is to create it.â⬠Success is not easily obtained and often takes a great deal of time; however in my eyes, success is the key to my future. I have plans to become a registered nurse, live in Franklin, Tennessee, and spend my free time making memories with my family. Over the course of the past three years, I have spent an abundance of time in and out of the hospital between different family members and clinicals for health science, a class exploring the medical field. These two factors have greatly influenced my decision to become a nurse. Nurses playâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦With that being said, I plan to quit my job to focus solely on my future in nursing. Once I complete nursing school I will need to find a hospital that I would like to be employed at. It has always been part of my plan to move to a new place after college, a place far enough away yet close enough to home. I have always enjoyed visiting Tennessee. The atmosphere is satisfying and the environment is simply beautiful. I plan to move to Franklin, Tennessee and work at the local hospital, Williamson Medical Center. The average salary for a registered nurse is around $65,000 a year; although, the pay for a nurse in Franklin is slightly below average at $62,000 a year for a nurse just beginning their career (Thomas). The need for nurses is extremely high which causes them to work long hours, so they work hard for the pay they receive. ââ¬Å"I tend to work ten to twelve hour shifts and we are usually shorthanded with nurses,â⬠says Thomas. During my interview with Megan Thomas, I realized that working at Williamson Medical Center will be just like any other hospital as far as working long hours. During my free time away from working at Williamson Medical Center, I plan to be spend time doing things in the community. Living in Franklin, TN can be compared to living in Hattiesburg, MS as far as the population, attractions, restaurants and more. There are approximately 68,886 people living in Franklin, TN. Although chain restaurants have amazing food, I prefer
