Compare and contrast images of heroism in these two...

Compare and contrast images of heroism in these two poems. Heroism is a trait that we seem to have no problem identifying, yet when asked to define what a hero is a myriad of answers emerge. This phenomenon is not unique to today’s society; the definition of a hero is something that is constantly under revision and debate. An example of this can be seen in two older pieces of English literature: Beowulf, written circa 750-900, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written circa 1375-1400. These stories both have a main character that possesses heroic qualities, many of which are very similar. Gawain’s identity as a hero is not clearly demonstrated, but when compared with Beowulf, who is demonstrated to be a hero, hiss merits†¦show more content†¦One such way this was done was by having neither of the main characters as all powerful rulers; in fact each Beowulf and Gawain served some sort of higher authority. Beowulf, throughout approximately 2/3 of the story serves Hrothgar. Similarly, Gawain was not ruler of his domain but served King Arthur. It is important to note that while both served other men, they were not themselves servants. Beowulf traveled from his land to assist in the destruction of Grendel, and Gawain chose to be a knight of the Round Table and indeed viewed his service to Arthur and his kingdom as an honor. By the construct of having both main characters serve others, the author has created more capacity for heroism to become apparent. If the President of the United States were to prevent nuclear war, the people would obviously be relieved and grateful that he fulfilled his duty. If a soldier on the field accomplished the same task, he would be regarded as a true hero. Transcending one’s traditional role and going above and beyond is a characteristic which helps to set heroes apart from other people. Sir Gawain goes above and beyond his role when declaring his intention to battle the Green Knight. â€Å"I would come to your counsel before your court noble. /For I find it not fit, as in faith it is known, /WhenShow MoreRelatedUnit: The Changing Australian Voice (The Man from Snowy River and Municipal Gum)1363 Words   |  6 PagesASSESSMENT RATIONALE UNIT: THE CHANGING AUSTRALIAN VOICE [NAME REDACTED] GIRRAWEEN HIGH SCHOOL Task Requirements Task: You are to create a representation of TWO of the poems studied in class and an explanation or rationale of your work. Ethical behavior is legally governed rather volunteered by organizations Free Essays

Corporate Organizations, in today’s cut- throat competition and globalized economy are forced to focus to improve their bottom line. Corporate governance or ethical practices are limited to a level which is mandatory as per laws. Genuine commitment to ethics is like a needle in haystack. We will write a custom essay sample on Ethical behavior is legally governed rather volunteered by organizations or any similar topic only for you Order Now There are various elements to ethical behavior expected from the organizations Accounting transparency: Enron and Worldcom are glaring examples where ethics were compromised to maintain profitable image of the organization. Accounting firm Arthur Anderson’s creative accounting and ulterior motives of management crippled investor’s confidence to the nadir, resulting in bankruptcy/ closure of all three organizations. Leading by example: As per data, US CEOs were paid 42 times the average worker’s pay in 1980, to 85 in 1990, and then skyrocketed to 531 times by 2000. Leadership teams of organizations are paid everything to show healthy growth in turnover and profits, for shareholder to be exited at stock markets. No CEO is paid to exemplify ethical leadership at Wall Street. Child labor: Many corporate, primarily in apparel segment, overlook the extreme levels of child exploitation in third world countries. In absence of strict law or policy, child labor is another big area which is not effectively monitored and contained. Summary: Though state (U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission) try to put accounting and auditing system, Corporate Ethics remain an Oxymoron. Ethics, like democracy, is a lot easier in theory than in practice. It would be imperative on regulatory bodies and responsible corporations to take lead in showing value in becoming ethical organization. Moreover, shareholders also should reward organization which exhibit transparency and good quality corporate governance. In Gary Crew and Phillip Neils... free essay sample

In Gary Crew and Phillip Neilsons text, Edward Britton, the protagonist, Edward, is portrayed to be a strong and brave young adult who had been well educated before he was sent to Point Puer, a prison for boys. Having his own hopes and dreams about his future but also trying not to stand out too much from seven hundred boys, Edward is handsome and has the ability to think and respond quickly to various situations throughout the text. Izod, however, the sub main character of the novel is the opposite of Edward, he is small, bony and is devastated by the murder of his family in which he keeps revenge and dark thoughts on his mind.Izods character shows he has many villainous thoughts throughout the text. He receives great joy from evil, such as hate, revenge and murder. The reason for his hunger for vengeance is because of his devastation from the loss of his family of nine after the Wolfe family had lost everything they owned because of Lieutenant Buckridge. We will write a custom essay sample on In Gary Crew and Phillip Neils or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Izod was very determined to kill the Lieutenant Buckridge so much that he did not care if he died in the act of murdering but he cannot be happy until its done. In the text, Izod brings the plot forward without being noticed by others too much. The arrival and the beauty of Buckridges daughter, Susan, cannot distract him from his plans. In Edward Britton, a novel by Gary Crew and Philip Neilson (2000), it is stated that Izod is not very interested in Susan or any sort of relationship with her despite her beauty. Izods clever mind assists him with the trial of poisoning one of the Chaplains. This demonstrates that Izod wants to see his victim suffer as much pain as possible by trailing poison on someone else before Buckridge. Izod knows not to attract attention to himself and especially since he has such a cruel and sinful mission to complete. In the beginning of the text, Izod and the rest of the boys attended a Sunday Service at the Church, instead singing the songs from the hymn books, he only pretended by moving his lips. When it was time for kneeling down and praying, the words that raged in his brain would never be considered as a prayer†¦ and if there is no god, and never was, then I call up the Diablos, the Dark One, to use me. In thinking this, this definitely shows the darker parts of Izod and the wicked thought of God. The fact that he wants to kill the Lieutenant Buckridge and his family shows that he is reckless on the loss of others around him. Izod has had no real education before his arrival at Point Puer, he feels stupid in reading and writing. Izods confidence lowers dramatically when he is asked to read to the class. As Mr. Bull whips him hard for stumbling on the words of the book, Izod does not feel the need to kick or to cry. Izods hate for Buckridge keeps him from reacting the same way as other boys might do in a beating. Izods disgusted face triggers Buckridges temper whilst Buckridge is mocking him. Despite Izods lack of education, he finally realises that if he doesnt practice on reading and writing more, soon enough, he will get beaten to death.†¦ it was the line you aint going to get nothin done that hit home. What if he died before he put Buckeridge down? What is he got killed before his revenge was complete? (pg. 87) this shows that he is very determined to kill Buckridge before he dies from a beating. In the text, Edward Britton by Gary Crew and Philip Neilson, Edward and Izod, the two main characters of the novel, show the different roles that they both play throughout the text. Due to Edwards characteristics, he is a brave and handsome young man who shows that his character is completely different from the others at the prison. Izod, however, is seen as a small, unnoticed and evil minded boy who is looking for revenge.

Nicole Tate Essays - Nicaragua, Republics, , Term Papers

Nicole Tate 11-04-98 World History (H) Essay "To pull together is to avoid being pulled apart." This once famous quote being said by Bob Allisat proves that if countries aren't interdependent upon each other than we will no longer be able to help each other and will not reek the benefits of what other countries give each other. I have three area of analysis for why Nicaragua is interdependent, one, foreign aid from other countries, two, disaster relief help and three imports and exports. The following essay shall discuss how Nicaragua is interdependent. Onto my first area of analysis, Nicaragua is interdependent through foreign aid from other countries. For example, in the 1980's Nicaragua's debt problems increased and prices of oil began to rise as well as Nicaragua's situation was worsened by a huge conflict dealing with military weapons. By 1994, their debt has increased to 11.7 billion, at this point in time Nicaragua had the highest debt in the world. Nicaragua was able to pull through this crisis from foreign aid from Mexico, Russia. Venezuela, Honduras, El Salvador, Argentina, and the Czech Republic. Because of these countries helping Nicaragua it has been able to pull through to a better economic state. As we saw, Nicaragua was interdependent from receiving foreign aid from various countries. Secondly, Nicaragua is interdependent through disaster relief. At this point in time Nicaragua is not undergoing just one but two natural disasters, Hurricane Mitch and volcano Cerro Negro, which erupted on Tuesday and consisted of 2,000 dead. Nicaragua's other disaster is Hurricane Mitch. Hurricane Mitch was described by CNN as "400,000 people now seeking shelter after losing their homes, health officials are watching for further outbreaks of Cholera, following sporadic reports of the disease." As of right now 9,000 are dead and no actual death toll will be known because of the small villages that can't be gotten to. The way Nicaragua is interdependent in these situations is that they are relying on the United States, France, Italy as well as several others for humanitarian aid immediately. In this example we see again that Nicaragua is interdependent by receiving disaster relief. Finally Nicaragua is interdependent because of imports and exports. Nicaragua imports food, agricultural needs, and medicines for their people. Nicaragua exports gold, silver, copper, and several others. In this case Nicaragua is interdependent because it gives countries items they need and Nicaragua gets items in which they need. This system always reminds me of that old saying you scratch my back and I will scratch yours. In essence, Nicaragua is interdependent for the above areas of analysis, which were foreign aid from other countries, disaster relief, and last but not least imports and exports. Surely if every country remains interdependent then we, as the world, will never pull apart as Bill Altsat stated.

o brother essays

o brother essays Have you heard of LivePerson? What do they do? Here's an illustration: Lessay you're an online storeowner, and you check your logs and notice that a lot of your customers check pages but don't buy. You figure that the reason they're not buying is because they're not sure of their purchase. As the store in online, they can't talk to a clerk and have questions answered like they can at Best Buy, so they leave your site to check out some other site, or buy the item offline. You could always put a ask us a question form up which takes the users' questions and emails them to you. This is good, but its often too slow for a casual peruser who is long gone from the site before you even see the question, much less answer it. A few years ago, someone realized that if you had an instant way to get and respond to these questions, you might be able to give a bit more of that in-store feel to the online purchasing experience, and increase your sales rate. Chat is instantaneous. A user can click on a button and ask questions and get responses immediately. With the instant resolution to their question, they are more likely to buy than those that don't talk to a person before their purchase. According to Land's End, they have over 5 times the sales rate with people that ask questions with their chat system than those who do not. To that end, LivePerson and several others pioneered this process. The system works by placing a button on every page of the storeowner's website (using templates, this is even easier). After the button is placed, a user will be able to look at the image and see if a customer service representative is available or not. If available, the user can click on the button and have a window pop up, allowing the store owner and user to communicate. This really only requires a basic chat server and some Javascript or Java know-how. A few years ago, there were as many as 40 companies that doing thi ...

Personal skills development( study skills and book review) Essay

Personal skills development( study skills and book review) - Essay Example Some of the effective study skills that I learnt from different resources and also applied to my learning process include note taking, time management, active listening, revision planning, preparing answers for the exams etc. Almost every day, I encounter such situations where I find the implication of these techniques within my study premises and apply the appropriate technique to handle the situation in more effective manner. For instance, today I have to write to complete the weekly assignment that is to write an essay upon any topic of my own interest. The guidelines provided by Barret et al (2008, p169) help me a lot in completing this task. The researchers explain basic steps of essay writing and I follow these steps. After deciding the main topic, I analyzed its title and main thesis and then proceed towards collecting material for the essay. During the reading, I take noted and plan the structure of my essay. After writing the essay, I proofread and edit it to assure it is perfect structure wise and deliver my intended tone. In this way, I use a study technique and succeed to write a well organize essay following simple and helpful steps of essay writing. The day was very busy and I was feeling too much tired and pressurized because there is little time left to appear in the exams and there are lot of things to do. At this point, I use my time management skills that I learnt from the reading of Marks-Beal (2009, p45). At first, I listed out the tasks that I have to complete before the exams and then arranged these tasks according to first priority. After that I made the plan to start working on these tasks one by one. There were some writing projects and I have also to read certain books and other material to prepare for answering exams questions. I started with the reading and keep on taking notes that later help me during the writing work. There were too many things to do in short time and I started feeling
