Blody Sunday by U2 essays Ireland is a country of an extraordinarily detailed past. This past, all based around the events which were pivoted and dictated by the rule of England and the English influence in Ireland. Prior to 1922 Ireland was simply one of Great Britains many colonies and was completely operated and governed by the political power in parliament in England. In Ireland, like many nations, different views existed about the English rule, different groups were present, some radical, some not. In the early 1900s, new groups were formed against the English rule, they were of the nationalist side and wanted Ireland to have complete home rule and to become a republic. This was the cause of heavy conflict over a period of more than 20 years where the Irish Nationalists, Ulster Unionists and the British government quarrelled over the fait of Ireland. Political groups and illegal groups all fought for there ambitions of the perfect Ireland. The song Bloody Sunday by U2 specifically relates to the event which occurred on Sunday 21st of November in 1920 during the brutal Anglo-Irish war between the British Government Forces and the IRA (Irish Republican Army). The IRA was led by Michal Collins, he believed the only way to drive the British out of Irealnd was by murder and intimidation and this is exactly what he did on Bloody Sunday mid-way through the Anglo-Irish war. Although heavily outnumbered the IRA were very strategical and effective during the war. Bloody Sunday was perhaps the most ferocious day of the war where members of Collins IRA assassination squad arrived at the Dublin homes of nineteen British soldiers and agents. All of which were woken from their sleep shortly after 8pm and shot , some in the presence of their wives and children, some in bed, others in the garden up against the wall.
