When he awakens, he realizes that he has been physically moved by Divine Lucy to paradise. Among the three dreams, it is the only one that gives a picture of Danteââ¬â¢s physical appearance. The dream ends and immediately Lucy departs, symbolizing divine transportation that Divine Lucy offers Dante. Danteââ¬â¢s second dream takes place in Canto XIX in the early morning hours. In this dream, Dante encounters a siren. He sees a woman who at first he describes as ugly (lines 8-9). Danteââ¬â¢s powerful gaze converts her into a powerful object of beauty (lines 10-15). Based in the United Kingdom this company has produced a lot of pieces which have toured internationally and have received awards , they also add to their achievements four award-winning films for television (www. dv8. co. uk) . In this essay I will discuss the intertextuality that can be seen in Dv8 original film The Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men conceived and directed by Lloyd Newson and how Newson approached the piece . Intertextuality can be defined as ââ¬Å"the complex interrelationship between a text and other texts taken as basic to the creation or interpretation of the textâ⬠(Wall, 2007:97). Or the ways in which the components of a performance text get meaning on the basis of their relationship with other texts(Jordan , 1992: 257). I this case this will be the way in which the piece makes reference to other material other than what the director and performers thoughts are about Nilsen. Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men is loosely based on Brian Masterââ¬â¢s book Killing for Company which is the story of Dennis Nilsen a serial killer who lured his victims (all young men ) back to his homes in Cricklewood and Muswell Hill and killed them by chopping their bodies into little pieces and stuffing them down the drain (http://www. ailymail. co. uk). Newson liked to challenge his audience by taking risks in his pieces not only physical risks but risks in his approach and within the piece itself draw form real life -the sociological and psychological- ââ¬Å" for many dance companies it seem risk just means nothing is risked in terms of content and approachâ⬠( Lloyd :www. dv8. co. uk) . Newson stresses that as a company they only work on pieces that are motivated and driven by how the central idea affects them, they talk about their own personal experiences before they start to rehearse and set actual choreography, the process of coming up with the final piece is a collaborative process ââ¬Å"by sharing the process the final work become collaborative and the performers get credited accordinglyâ⬠(www. dv8. co. uk) . The film also draws into homosexuality, at the time homosexuality was still something that people didnââ¬â¢t talk about widely it was all done behind closed doors . In Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men Newson ââ¬Å"explores the interwoven notions of loneliness, desire and trustâ⬠(www. dv8. co. uk) . As mentioned earlier at the time of the film homosexuality was seen as somewhat ââ¬Å"tabooâ⬠Newson draws on societies views and explores if what led Nilsen to his disturbing actions could have been the mere fact that there were already so many negative views place on homosexuality he was lonely in need of company -killing for company- ââ¬Å"societal homophobia often results in tragic consequencesâ⬠(www. dv8. co. uk) . The film is in black and white this in itself could be seen as an intertext , a photographer by the name of Robert Mapplethorpe famous for his photo called Man in Polyester Suit all his pictures are in black and white most of his work could be described as homoerotic, so this can be seen as intertext from the start the films exploration of homosexuality . Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men starts off at a bar or club just like where Dennis would have picked his victim at this point of the film there is pop music (popular gay culture ) playing , the music used as an intertext , movement at this time is not to the music but influenced by the music . The body language of the performer is that of a hunter seeking its prey (victim) . Then as the piece progresses the music moves from pop to a more slower tonal sound . This is when the piece moves to a more ââ¬Å"intimateâ⬠space ââ¬â into Dennisââ¬â¢s home-. Looking at the design and setting throughout the piece we can see that there are many deep intertexts , the use of the sculptures being one , sculptures of nude men almost as an objectification of men as if to say this is how men should look like . The costumes the white underwear not something you would have people where as their full costume on stage , and the dull colored shirts and pants worn by the other characters . There are a few scenes don in the bathroom where we see visible pipes relating to the drains where Dennisââ¬â¢s victims body parts were found , this could be an intertext to point out that the body parts in the drain were the reason that Dennis was caught so have the pipes visible in that way shows his one mistake that lead to his arrest. Also Newson uses the bathroom which is a secret place where some of the action takes place this also draws to the gay culture -secretive ââ¬Å"behind closed doorsâ⬠- . In the film most of the action is not actual ââ¬Å"danceâ⬠its all realism itââ¬â¢s realistic everyday moves and gestures ââ¬Å"realist dance can be said to communicate to audiences ,to attempt to reveal the truths of our worldâ⬠(Wall, 2007:91). In the bathroom scenes there is no dancing there is an exploration of weight and gestures no choreographed movement , the two men also exchange underwear this switching of something personal represents ntimacy (sexual acts) between them . The piece has a strong intertext to the womb in the bathtub the man lies in a fetal position there is also water and at some point he is immersed in it just like in the womb . The bathtub also being where Dennis drowned his victims or mutilated them . The picture of the man in fetal position in the water can be seen as both the beginning (fetus in womb) and the end (drowned by Dennis). Going back to the spacial design we see that besides the visible pipes the roof is not closed off -no ceiling- you can see the planks , when the performer is up on the roof and moving along the planks in an almost sneaky way this draws to secrecy again it also brings some Notre dame themes of people in the rafters sneaking around , bringing us back to the secrecy . Some have argued that in Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men Lloyd Newson portrays homosexuality in a bad way -as dirty and promiscuous- , they say that with this single film he has undone all the hard work done by gay activist in the past to have homosexuality accepted by society. In conclusion Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men is a powerful film digging deep into the action of a serial killer , playing on the intertextual meanings that we as the audience leave with questions about sometimes as viewers we consciously recognize where the style and ways of using style come from and at other times the origin just provides an unconsciously sensed undercurrent (Bazerman, 2001:1). Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men also shows that physical theatre is capable of taking on complex issues without simplifying the subject (www. dv8. co. uk).

Women were basically known only as the wife of their husbands and often helped them with their business affairs. Eventually, a minimal level of trade arose among women in the village, but nothing big enough to trigger a large outbreak of feminism at that time. A womenââ¬â¢s role in society can basically be summed up in this quote, ââ¬Å"The economic roles of married women were based upon two potentially conflicting values ââ¬â gender specialization and identity of interest. A wife was expected to become expert in the management of a household and the care of children, but she was also asked to assist in the economic affairs of her husband, becoming his representative and even his surrogate if circumstances demanded it.

Lord of the Flies: Piggy, Ralph, and Simon During English class, the eighth graders read Lord of the Flies. It is an adventurous novel about a group of school boys trying to survive on a lonely island. Each of the boys has their own personality and goals. While struggling to survive on the island, the boys' personalities show. My favorite character is Piggy. Piggy is a fat boy and wears glasses. He was raised by his aunt who owns a candy shop. Piggy represents the scientific, reasonable side of society.Although he is quite smart, the other boys like to make fun of him. All of the boys, that is, except Ralph. Ralph is another boy who is stranded on the island. Ralph is the athletic, charming character in the group. He is the first person Piggy runs into when they get to the island, and one of the few boys who do not make fun of him. Because of his kindness, he is elected leader of the group of boys. Ralph represents human beingsââ¬â¢ civilizing instinct. Another one of my favorite characters is Simon. Simon is the shy, sensitive boy in Lord of the Flies.He behaves kindly toward the other kids. He is the only character whose sense of morality seems to stay the same. Simon represents a kind of natural goodness, as opposed to the evil of Jack and the imposed morality of Piggy. As all three of the boys are trying to survive, each of them have their own ideas, proven by their different roles. Each of them have their own thoughts, proven by the many arguments between each other. As every boy has his own personality, Piggy, Ralph, and Jack are my favorites.

In any organizational setting, communication begins with the establishment of vertical alignment, which entails moving the organizationââ¬â¢s strategy through the company while turning objectives into actual work. Business alignment relies on continual communication within the organization which entails face-to-face contacts with all employees, regular meetings and internet. A clear understanding of the organizationsââ¬â¢ workflow helps employees perform effectively since they are aware how their performance affects company success and consumer satisfaction (Rausch, et al., 2013). Communication helps employees understand their performances and understand the course of their actions to ensure that their work remains organized and jointly reinforcing completely eradication workplace stress. Success and Failure of Organizational Activities Organizations increasingly struggle to achieve competitive advantage and the success or failure of such achievement is dependent on business implementation. Center for Creative Leadership and Vangent(2007), explain that human capital is the most important component of business implementation. This is also evident in the fact that most researchers relate employees mental well being to organizational effectiveness.à à It is critical for organizations take full advantage of their human capital investments by incorporating it in their strategic plan for effective management of employee talent base. Success and failure of organizational activities can be as a result of radical shifts in the businessââ¬â¢ external as well as internal environment(Scott, 1992). Consistent with this paperââ¬â¢s argument is the fact that failure in organizational activities connected to the effectiveness of the management team. à There are several challenges in management that can lead to either s uccess or failure of organizational activities.à It is possible for the management to be composed of people who are homogeneous or heterogeneous in ideas and style of leadership. In situations requiring decision-making during turbulent times, heterogeneous groups are efficient than homogenous groups. Fink (1986) outlines that, in situations requiring fast decision-making in a catastrophic event, homogenous groups are effective. Besides, long serving and homogenous teams are unable to diagnose the causes of failure in escalating situations effectively (Fink, 1986).à For example, a homogenous management team may cut costs by increasing employee work load as a measure to increase production. Such wrong decisions can amplify the existing problem leading to complete failure of the business; these are some known cause of stress in the workplace (Schumpeter, 2010; Health and Safety Executive, 2006). Long-tenured managers often perceive business failures to come from external and temp orary issues while ignoring internal factors responsible for the failure, such as employee working conditions. Long serving managers are rigid to change, slow at decision-making and entrenchment, and spend more time identifying threats facing the organization (Geroski, 2001). Managerial succession improves organizational performance and survival rates. For example managerial succession in most organizations reduces conflict, increase business financial returns, and growth rates in situations whereby the successor is an outsider. Nonetheless, Miller (1990) asserts that success often results in over-confidence and arrogance among most organizations. Arrogance prevents firms from making small changes in their operations which leads to failure (Miller, 1990). In addition, successful organizations in reaction to external competitive pressures result to conservatism or even arrogant attitude. This is consistent with the common phrase in the business circles ââ¬Å"success breeds failure a nd failure brings further failure in a spiral of business decayâ⬠(Ranft ONeill, 2001, p. 126). Besides, most businesses have the tendency to develop successful routines which grows into habits and routines ultimately become traditions thus preserving the companyââ¬â¢s way of conducting business. As a result of redundancy in business processes, companies that were previously successful become unable to prevent their own downfall in the future. This is partly due to their inability to adopt a new and better method of business operations, such as implementation of knowledge management; this mitigates all other factors that could impede performance such as workplace stress. Moreover, success of organizational activities is often attributed to skills and training of managers, internal work environment, and psychological traits of employees. This part of the study focuses on managerial skills, training, and external environmental situations that encourage business success. As indicated in the below paragraphs, these two issues are essential because they are often influenced by policymakers in the organization(Henry Evans, 2008).According to a study by Levin-Epstein (2002), the most essential factor contributing success is good managerial skills coupled with financing, and personal traits. In this study, a manager with poor managerial skills is callous to the employees and makes the workplace environment unsuitable for most workers. This stresses some employees to the extent that their workplace productivity reduces. However, well-behaved and welcoming managers increase the employeesââ¬â¢ morale thus increasing productivity which translates to business success. Besides, understanding the needs of the employees and customers increases the workersââ¬â¢ job satisfaction which increases productivity and ultimate success (Wheeler et al., 2007). Hard work is also an essential factor contributing to business success though the recommended eight hours may lead to improved satisfaction among employees. Such situations increase employeesââ¬â¢ productivity and performance resulting in business activities success. Internal work environment and psychological traits of employees are the other factors that determine business success or failure. Most psychological studies indicate that high-esteem among employees regarding their roles in the organization reduces stress thus making them committed to the company (Dowell, 2001). In such scenarios, their productivity and performance increases contributing to business success, and failure in the contrary. Besides, self-competence and commitment increases business success; self-concept are ideas a person has about themselves based on their interactions with others. Based on this, if a person has a positive self-concept, they will act in a positive manner to increase their productivity and success of organizational activities. Employees who have high self-concept often believe in their abilities to accomplish any duty which makes them successful in most business errands; this increases performance, as well as, business success and most important creates a zero stress environment. Conclusion Stress is a symptom of a much complicated management challenges; it is not the problem as many researchers claim. Despite the fact that stress has a negative impact on employee performance and productivity, it is more important that organizations incorporate learning, knowledge management, and effective people management in strategic planning that support organizational effectiveness, as well as understanding the causes of success and failure in organizational activities. This would help demystify the common fallacy that stress is king in organizational effectiveness. Nonetheless, as indicated in the preceding paragraphs, stress has adverse effects on employees and stress management is necessary to minimize organizational failures. However, it is not the only factor that causes reduced workplace productivity and performance. Individuals in an organization must be able to share important knowledge through a well guided and effective organizational culture. This is a great motivator as well as a stress moderator. In addition, an organization must have in place good managerial structures that positively impact individuals in the organization. Human capital has been seen as vital in business implementation, a factor that has led many to focus on stress and its effects on organizational performance instead of management as a moderator of such a condition. Moreover, failure and success depends on factors such as the composition of the management, environmental changes, skills and training of managers, internal work environment among others. To alleviate organizational problems, methods such as social support, better workplace conditions, and self-perception among others are necessary to mitigate workplace failures. Additionally, engaging in interesting and complex tasks combined with flexible work procedures reduce failure rates which increases their productivity, but intra-department competition and poor interactions may alleviate the problems. Despite the numerous consequences associated with workplace issues, most organizations are reluctant to deal with the problems. Mrs. Brown is another such character who opposes Tamaraââ¬â¢s choice of Maasai traditional religion and culture but comes around with time, although she is still not strongly satisfied even till the end. Rajab and Youssef are two Muslim brothers who fight a lot amongst themselves but their fights are not of a serious nature. They fight because Youssef keeps motivating Rajab to be a little closer to their religion Islam while Rajab is a free soul who came on earth merely to enjoy and marvel life. The brothers provide comic relief and their conversations provide different perspectives on the perception of religious identity in the west after 9/11. But there is another interesting twist to the story, both secretly love Tamara and have their own unique styles of showing their feelings. Rajab f inds an interesting opportunity to be with Tamara in accompanying her to Kenya but is not motivated by her cause, which is until he experiences the Maasai life firsthand. He helps Tamara significantly in giving awareness to the tribal people. Rajabââ¬â¢s character flourishes into the second strongest character after Tamara. The prejudices people still hold based on ethnicity are highlighted through the lack of help Tamara

Gilgamesh and Odysseus Essay Odysseus main challenge is to help defeat the Trojans in the battle of the Trojan horse. All the men who survived the war and the sea were safely back at home, other than Odysseus, he still had a long journey ahead of him. In the beginning of his journey, his challenge was brought upon him by the powerful God of the sea Poseidon. Poseidon became Odysseus enemy after a Cyclops held him and his crewmates captive. After escaping the Cyclops, Odysseus blinded it with fire and his sword. The Cyclops was the son of Poseidon, after telling his dad what happened Poseidon became full of rage and swore to Odysseus that he would pay for what he had done, and he would wander the seas for ten years as his punishment. After leaving the island of the Cyclops, Odysseus encountered Aeolus, who gave him a bag of winds that would have directed him back to Ithaca. However, one of the crewmembers was anxious to see what was in the bag, that he opened the bag while Odysseus was sleeping. Seeing that Odysseus was the only one that was directed to open the bag this caused terrible winds to come out which blew the men further off course. After many other challenges, at sea Odysseus ended up the only survivor. A few days later, he came to the island of the goddess Calypso; she fell madly in love with him, and held captive on her island for seven years. Upon that seventh year things started to change for Odysseus. Athena, daughter of Zeus and Odysseusââ¬â¢ protector, discussed his fate with the other gods that who assembled in Zeusââ¬â¢ home. All of the gods besides Poseidon sympathized with Odysseus, because of what he did to his son. Zeus however told the God Hermes to tell Calypso to let him go and give him a raft, food, and clothing for his journey to Ithaca; this did not settle will with Poseidon. Poseidon again wrecked Odysseusââ¬â¢ raft and which led him to have to swim to an island naked and exhausted. He woke with laughing women around him, who took Odysseus to meet there parents. They later found out who he was and his role in the Trojan war and helped him on his journey back home. A few more things that took place in his journey back home. When Odysseus finally got home back to Ithaca to be with his family he appreciated what he left behind even more. Odysseus when through many tests, all physically, mental, and emotional but he still survived and overcame his adversities. A woman- a goddess formed Enkidu from clay, by the name ofà Aruru. A woman (Shamhat) seduced Enkidu. Gilgamesh sent Shamhat, the harlot to Enkidu as a gift but Enkidu was too full of himself to understand the depth and implications of it. The intercourse was for six days and seven nights. Shamhat was supposedly helped Enkidu become a man and a civilized human being. They learned that the love of a woman was valued above all others. In conclusion, the main comparisons between the journeys of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey were men facing several trials and tribulations that women had been the main cause of the problems and challenges. In Gilgamesh, Enkidu had challenges from the goddess and in Odyssey; Odysseus had challenges from the gods and goddess.
